Noir is a film genre with an intriguing history. It began in the 1930s as a new term for detective fiction. Films of that era were referred to as “film noir” because they used black as a primary visual motif, lots of shadows and even characters’ faces were often shot in greyscale. In the 1940s, this style became its own cinematic subgenre that continued to develop through the remainder of the 20th century.
